SEAFDEC, Malaysia bolster ties for sustainable fisheries

SEAFDEC conducted a 3-day courtesy visit to Malaysia from February 28 to March 1, 2024. Led by Dr. Suttinee Limthammahisorn, the SEAFDEC Secretary-General and Chief of Training Department, the delegation toured Terengganu and paid courtesy visit to the Director General of the Department of Fisheries of Malaysia and the Council Director for SEAFDEC. The visit concluded in both parties agreeing to explore collaboration opportunities in the discussed areas, highlighting mutual commitment.

Bangladesh: Government to stop manufacturing of current fishing nets

Fisheries and Livestock Minister, M Abdur Rahman, has announced the government's intention to restrict the production of illegal fishing nets, including monofilament and current nets, with the aim of boosting fisheries output in natural habitats across the country. He emphasized that those using such nets, particularly for catching young fish like Jatka, are enemies of society and will face strict consequences. He made these remarks during the inauguration of Jatka Conservation Week-2024 in Chandpur.

More tuna fisheries meet MSC standards

Marine Stewardship Council certified tuna fisheries is increasing, enabling a ready supply of responsibly sourced produce for a growing number of brands and retailers.

As of 16 January this year, an estimated 42% (2,085,200 tonnes) of the global tuna catch is MSC certified, with a further 11% (539,179 tonnes) in assessment. Skipjack fisheries were a major contributor to this shift with MSC-certified skipjack now available from all four oceans (Atlantic, Indian, Eastern Pacific and Western Central Pacific) compared with two years ago when only Indian and Western Central Pacific Oceans catches were certified.
