SPAIN: The meetings between the Ministry and the local authorities have come to

fruition, which is great news for much of the Canarian fishing sector that can improve its annual fishing season.

The General Secretariat of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has given the green light to the request of the Fishing Council of the Regional Executive that reopens the bluefin tuna fishery in 2019 to the tuna fleet of the Canary Islands from 00.00 from November 4 to 11:59 p.m. on December 31, or once the quota is consumed.

In the resolution of the Ministry issued on 23 October it is established that once 85% of  the assigned quota has been consumed, the General Secretariat of Fisheries will preventively close the fishing season until real consumption is verified.

This is good news for the Canarian fleet, given that during the first part of the year the total bluefin tuna quota allocated to fishing vessels based on the Archipelago could not be consumed, leaving a remaining 130.31 tonnes which can now be extracted.

The Ministry, following the proposal of the Canarian Government, will proceed to manage the reopening of the fishery through an Olympic fishing system (one in which the vessels go fishing without a previous assignment) to ensure the total consumption of the corresponding quota to the Canary fleet.

The head of the Council of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Alicia Vanoostende, who thanks the Ministry for its "good predisposition in meetings held in Madrid," explains that "this is good news for much of the Canary Islands fishing sector that may thus improve its annual fishing season and, likewise, justice is done with the quota allocated to the traditional Canarian fleet whose activity is compatible with fishing sustainability and respect for the environment.”
