On 10 July, St. Petersburg hosted the opening ceremony of the main fishing industry event of the year – III Global Fishery Forum and International Exhibition of Fish Industry, Seafood and Technology (Seafood Expo Russia).

This is the third time that the Northern Capital of Russia has attracted fishing industry professionals from all over the world. The Forum and Exhibition bring together specialists from all areas of the fishing industry, from fishing to end consumer delivery.

Welcoming speeches were made by Sergey Mitin, Senior Vice-Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Agriculture and Food Policy, Dmitry Patrushev, Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, and Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Russia and Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries.

“The Russian Federation ranks fourth among the world’s commercial fisheries, accounting for more than 5% of the global catch. In 2018, our fishermen produced more than 5 million tonnes of aquatic bioresources, a record result for over more than a quarter of a century. The fishing industry is an essential part of the Russian economy and is also of strategic importance for food security. Today, Russia faces the ambitious task of becoming a leader not only in terms of catch but also production and supply of fish products. For this purpose, the state provides large-scale support. Its volumes are increasing every year and this trend will continue,” Dmitry Patrushev said in his welcome address.

Ilya Shestakov, Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, noted that the results of the II Forum and Expo confirmed that Russia was correct in its intention to make the event annual. “We decided to relieve September, which is full of business events, and to hold the Forum and Exhibition in the middle of July, on the eve of Fisherman’s Day in Russia and before the beginning of the active stage of salmon fishing, which is already going on in the Far East. This year, we have gone a step further. In terms of both participants and the number of guests gathered today, we see that the authority of the Forum and Exhibition is growing not only in Russia but worldwide as well. We hope we will soon be among the biggest seafood expo events, which are held every year in Brussels, Qingdao and Boston,” he stressed.

The theme of the Forum this year – “Ocean of Opportunities: Nature, Economy, and People” – follows the logic of the previous plenary meetings. “We will look at use of ocean resources from three perspectives: environmental, economic and social. And we will try to find a balance. We hope the third Forum and Exhibition will provide an impetus to new joint projects, further development of international relations and achievement of great industry results in national economies and at the interstate level,” Ilya Shestakov said.

In his speech, Sergey Mitin focused on the social aspect of the fishing industry and the related topics for discussion at the Forum. “Fishery is the basis for urban planning for coastal areas,” he underlined.

The opening ceremony was attended by high-ranking guests, including Bekir Pakdemirli, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Republic of Turkey; Frederick Loua, Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Maritime Economy, Republic of Guinea; Has Sareth, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Kingdom of Cambodia; Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Bangladesh; Amiran Kakalia, Minister of Agriculture, Republic of Abkhazia; Choi Joon-wook, Deputy Minister of Marine Policy, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Republic of Korea; and Atanas Dobrev, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Bulgaria.

During the walk through the Exhibition, the heads of fishing departments and honoured guests visited the stands of Russia’s fishing and processing companies, including Norebo Group, Russian Fishery Company and Antey Group, and the stands equipment manufacturers Fishering Service, Technologicheskoe Oborudovanie, Optimar and KAPP.
