Surabaya, Indonesia, 27 May 2019 - Low quality; lack of standards compliance; and high prices are among the key impediments that prevent the export of Indonesian pangasius.

This changed today, when PT. Adib Global Food - one of the partners of the SECO-funded SMART-Fish programme that is jointly implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) - successfully shipped almost 200 tons of frozen pangasius fillet and steaks, valued at USD472,000, to Saudi Arabia.

The company mainly sources its fish from the district of Tulungagung, where the SMART-Fish programme has supported a majority of farmers to produce better feed, improve water management and adopt better aquaculture practices. As a result, farmers have managed to enhance the quality of their fish to meet the standard of export markets; comply with national and export market requirements; and reduce the cost of production: farmers increased their income and were encouraged to explore export markets.

“This first export means a lot to the industry; the Government is hoping that this will be the vehicle to drive more exports from Indonesia”, said Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs (MMAF) Nilanto Perbowo. “The development of the National Standard for Pangasius Fillet (SNI), which helps produce pangasius and value added products in compliance with the international market requirements, was essential”.

In addition, the Catfish Producer Association (APCI) launched the brand ‘Indonesian Pangasius - the Better Choice’ to promote the unique values of the Indonesian pangasius. The SMART-Fish Programme is implemented by UNIDO and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, with the financial support of Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
