Bumble Bee becomes first company to use blockchain platform for tuna tracking

UNITED STATES: Bumble Bee Foods is now using SAP’s blockchain cloud platform to track yellowfin tuna, enabling anglers, buyers, pre-processors and canners to track the movement of fish from origin to packaging via a transparent, real-time supply chain platform.
The blockchain platform allows consumers to scan the QR code and see information on where the fish was caught – and the journey it took on its way to the store.

Scientists intend to obtain tough fast growing tilapia in sea water

SINGAPORE:Scientists from Singapore are breeding tough, fast-growing superfish that have extra amounts of healthy fat and are also disease-resistant and rich in Omega-3 that are able to survive in sea water as part of the efforts to produce more local, high-quality protein.
This premium tilapia, being bred in Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL), will join the ranks of locally produced fish stock - TLL-bred sea bass and barramundi developed by Barramundi Asia, The Strait Times reported.

Pacific Catalyst announces projects to strengthen fisheries management

FIJI: Pacific Catalyst, a partnership of fishery management experts in collaboration with the University of the South Pacific (USP), has announced their official launch and described several projects they have underway and they also introduced their new website.
Pacific Catalyst supports achievement of regional oceanic and coastal fisheries goals and the emergence of a new generation of fisheries managers. Partners include the University of the South Pacific, the University of Wollongong, Duke University, iTunaIntel and Environmental Defense Fund.

Indonesian one-by-one tuna brand is to be launched

INDONESIA:In close collaboration with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), the Indonesian Pole & Line and Handline Fisheries Association (AP2HI) is to launch the Indonesian one-by-one tuna brand at the Seafood Expo North America in Boston.
Using Indonesian Tuna brand, AP2HI and over 30 of its members (Indonesian tuna companies) will promote the sustainable fishing pole-and-line and handline caught tuna to the world.

SFP announces new joint aquaculture improvement project in Indonesia

INDONESIA: Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) is pleased to announce the initiation of a new sustainable aquaculture improvement project in Indonesia.

The project, scheduled for two years in Banyuwangi, East Java, will focus on improving the sustainability of aquaculture in the region, as well as governance and management of ongoing shrimp farming.

Fishing restated among the country’s main exporting complexes

ARGENTINA : During 2018, the fishing industry exported 489,173 tonnes of seafood in exchange for USD 2,148 million, which meant a growth of 2.9 per cent in volume and 8.6 per cent in foreign currency compared to 2017.
The activity generated by the sector allows it to confirm its place among the main exporting complexes in the country. A recent INDEC report places the fishing activity as the eighth in importance over steel, grapes, and aluminum, among others.

First fishery achieves MSC certification for bigeye tuna

CHINA : A Chinese owned longline yellowfin and bigeye tuna fishery in the Federated States of Micronesia has achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for its bigeye tuna catch. This is the first time that bigeye has been certified to the MSC’s globally recognised standard for sustainable fishing.
The fishery, owned by three Chinese fishing companies, Liancheng Overseas Fishery (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd (SZLC), China Southern Fishery Shenzhen Co. Ltd (CSFC) and Liancheng Overseas Fishery (FSM) Co. Ltd. (FZLC), achieved MSC certification for yellowfin in October 2018. Following an independent assessment by conformity assessment body, Control Union, bigeye can now be added to the list of certified species caught by the fishery.

Barramundi producer invests USD 2 million to increase its production capacity

SINGAPORE: The local company Barramundi Asia has just inaugurated the expansion of its barramundi nursery, a project in which it invested USD 2 million with the purpose of tripling its production to almost 1.8 million fry per year.
By producing its own fry, the company can control the entire fish life cycle, from the egg stage until it reaches the final consumer. The fry that are born in their facilities are transferred to marine pens where they develop until they reach commercial size, and after their harvest they are processed marketed under their Kühlbarra brand.
