PHILIPPINES: The Philippine Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) is ready to launch a 5-year national fisheries plan.

The implementation of the Comprehensive National Fisheries Industry Development Plan (CNFIDP) 2016-2020 will be announced by the agency in February, during the first National Fisheries Industry Summit at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City, immediately after the national Bangus Congress.

State Dept. steps in to help tuna fishing boats

The U.S. State Department has stepped in to help American tuna boats that have been shut out of a vast area of the Pacific Ocean controlled by a cluster of island nations.

A department official told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Thursday that it was communicating with the island nations in hopes of coming up with a resolution. The boats have been locked out since Jan. 1.

Trader Joe's accused of selling cans containing less tuna

UNITED STATES: The chain of specialty grocery stores, Trader Joe’s, has been accused of violating federal regulations for selling fish cans containing less than indicated on their labels, claims a new class action lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court.

The lawsuit says that the company’s tuna brands actually contain less than 3 ounces of the fish and that every lot tested, and nearly every single can, was underfilled.

EU eases requirements to import Bangladeshi shrimp

INFOFISH along with FAO is jointly organising a 3 day regional capacity building workshop on “Regional and National Good practices in Seafood Traceability in Asia”, at Kochi, Kerala, India during 22nd-24th March 2016.The workshop  is intended at capacity building for Government officials in Asian countries on seafood traceability related to sustainable fisheries management and trade in legal seafood products, in order to combat IUU fishing and illicit trade in CITES listed aquatic species.

Innovative fish farming in once barren land

BANGLADESH: It is a surprising tale. In Rangpur region, in the northern part of Bangladesh, no one was able to do well in fish farming. Although Teesta, Brahmaputra, Ghagot, Dharla and other rivers flow across the region, still during the dry season water crisis does not allow fish farming in the region. The Gangachhara region was born on a dead river called Gaang, but and it now sees remarkable success in fish farming. A fish farmer named Mahfuz Shah did the miracle.

First Major Yellowfin Fishery MSC Certified

MARSHALL ISLANDS: With an MSC certification for skipjack tuna already four years under its belt, the PNA free school purse seine fishery in the WCPO has now become the first major fishery to achieve MSC certification for yellowfin catch. The holder of the certification is the PNA office in the Marshall Islands.
