20,000 products already bear MSC label

GERMANY :Today the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has reached an important milestone with the launch of the 20,000th MSC labelled product.

The product that has made it possible to reach this milestone is "Las Cuarenta Paella", a frozen food ready for consumption that is now available in Netto stores across Germany, made with pollock from Alaska and Russia, blue shell mussels from Denmark, and shrimps from Suriname.

Sabah relaxes ban on fish exports

MALAYSIA:Sabah authorities have decided to partially lift a ban on fresh seafood exports and allow live aquaculture raised fish to be brought out of state.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya Hussin said the partial lifting of the export ban was because aquaculture was a key source of income for many Sabahans, and it also may help improve the trade balance.

INDIA :Fisheries scientists recommended a greater role for women self-help groups to boost aquaculture production in the country.

The specialists state that women could play a key role in the development of the aquaculture sector through the creation of small-scale entrepreneurship in the cultivation of ornamental fish fry breeding, the culture of live food for fish larvae, fattening crabs, rearing crab seed, shell crafts and pearl culture, among other activities.

Feed capable of increasing tilapia's nutritional value under testing

EGYPT :As part of a new project, WorldFish scientists will begin to experiment with feed ingredients that can increase the nutritional value of tilapia.

AquaLINC, funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), aims to increase supplies of fish that are more affordable and have a higher nutritional content for consumers in Egypt and Bangladesh.

Mexico raises a position in FAO fishery production ranking

MEXICO :Mexico has managed to move from 17th to 16th position in the ranking of FAO’s international fishery production from 2012 to date.

This has been achieved thanks to public policies implemented during the current administration and the private and social sector participation, said the national commissioner of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Mario Aguilar Sanchez, during his speech at the first forum "Strengthening social participation in fisheries public policy."
