IPNLF launches new tuna coastal fisheries project

INDONESIA: The NGOs International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) and Asosiasi Perikanan Pole & Line dan Handline (AP2HI) have partnered the NGO Walton Family Foundation to accelerate reform in Indonesia’s coastal tuna fisheries through improvements in the one-by-one sector.
 
As part of this two-year partnership, IPNLF will expedite improvements in the pole-and-line and handline fisheries to enable them to reach the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard for environmental sustainability, while also ensuring international seafood markets have access to the certified products once they become available. This ambition will be further supported by IPNLF’s strategic partnership with USAID Oceans.

Benchmark develops disease-resistant shrimp for the Asian market

UNITED KINGDOM: Benchmark Holdings has developed specific pathogen resistant (SPR) shrimp to address issues facing the Asian market and has plans to soon commence field trials in the region.

This breakthrough development, which is the result of over 20 years experience in the firm’s breeding and genetics teams in Norway and Colombia, aims at avoiding losses, valued at billions of dollars per year for the global shrimp industry, due to disease.

New technology to boost murrel farming

INDIA: The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) has developed new technology for murrel natural breeding in controlled conditions in Odisha, which will make it possible to increase its production.

This new technological development it will be able to breed the species and to produce seeds in concrete tanks, New Indian Express reported.

More than half tuna stocks have healthy levels, according to ISSF

WORLDWIDE: The latest report on tuna fishery status released by the organisation International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) indicates that globally, 57 percent of the tuna stocks are at a healthy level of abundance, 17 percent are overfished and 26 percent are at an intermediate level.

This document, called Status of the World Fisheries for Tuna, summarizes and rates the status and management of 23 major commercial tuna stocks, based on the most recent scientific assessments as well as management measures adopted by the Tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations and Bodies (RFMOs). In addition, it ranks the status and management of these stocks using a consistent methodology in terms of three factors: Abundance, Exploitation/Management (fishing mortality) and Environmental Impact (bycatch).

Aller Aqua opens new factory in Qingdao

CHINA: Aquaculture feed producer Aller Aqua Group has opened a new factory, its sixth, this time in Qingdao, China. This opening follows that of the plant opened in Zambia a month ago.

“We have had a few busy years leading up to the inaugurations and now we are finally ready. I am proud of what we have achieved,” pointed out Hans ErikBylling, Group President for Aller Aqua Group.

Cooperation with Vietnam on fisheries and aquaculture health and safety strengthened

PERU: The National Sanitary Fisheries Agency (SANIPES) will actively intervene in fisheries cooperation issues between Peru and Vietnam, in particular with regard to strengthening fisheries and aquaculture health and safety in the country.
 
At the First Meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Affairs and Technical Cooperation between the governments of Peru and Vietnam, held at the headquarters of the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, the national fisheries authority exchanged information with the members of the visiting delegation for these purposes.
