Japan Eager to Develop Cooperation on Fisheries & Aquaculture

MOROCCO: State Secretary for Fisheries, Mbarka Bouaida, held recently in Japan talks with several Japanese senior officials, which focused on the means to develop cooperation between the two countries on fisheries and aquaculture.
 
During her visit to Japan (Feb. 6-8), Bouaida, who was accompanied by Director of the National Aquaculture Development Agency, Majida Maarouf, and Morocco’s ambassador to Japan, Rachad Bouhlal, met with several senior Japanese officials to learn about Japan's know-how in the areas of aquaculture and fisheries and to deepen collaboration in these fields, said a release by the National Aquaculture Development Agency.

BANGLADESH : Riding on the recent revolution in fish and livestock farming, Bangladesh for the first time achieved self-sufficiency in animal protein, according to a government report.
 
Against a demand of 40.50 lakh tonnes of fish, Bangladesh recorded surplus fish production with an annual output of 41.34 lakh tonnes in 2016-17, according to the latest report of the Department of Fisheries.

Safe Tuna Catch gets USD 5 million to develop low-mercury fish products

UNITED STATES: Safe Catch, a San Francisco, CA-based food tech startup, recently got USD 5 million in seed funding to develop more fish products with very low mercury content.
 
The funds, provided by Echo Capital, Essential Investments, and other investors, will help the company expand its product range, which includes a line of bagged tuna seasoned with "real spice blends", canned Ahi tuna and canned and bagged salmon.

New strategies promoted to value aquaculture by-products

SPAIN: The technological institute AZTI leads a project that seeks to promote sustainable aquaculture and the efficient use of resources through the promotion of innovation and the transfer of knowledge in the field of the valorisation of aquaculture by-products.
 
The initiative, called Valacui, will be developed throughout 2018 with the collaboration of the Spanish Technological Platform of Fisheries and Aquaculture (PTEPA). The Biodiversity Foundation and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, through the Pleamar Program, co-financed by the FEMP, will also collaborate.

Shrimp farming proves profitable in Punjab but still needs developing

INDIA: For six years, shrimp farming has been carried out as a pilot test in waterlogged areas of Muktsar and Fazilka districts, Punjab state, by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), located in Ludhiana.
 
GADVASU representatives explain that this land is not usable for any other crop as it has a salinity of 5 parts per thousand, 10 times the salinity of river water, Hindustan Times reported.
 
Farmers stated that they earn an income of INR 1 million (USD 15,500) in the shrimp season.

National Assembly passes reformed Fisheries Law to tackle IUU fishing

VIET NAM: Vietnamese National Assembly has passed the revised Law on Fisheries, including new features to strengthen illegal unreported unregulated (IUU) fishing fight and help the country gain the removal of the yellow card from the European Union.
 
The announcement was made by Deputy General Secretary of Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) Nguyễn Hoài Nam, who explained one of these new features is an action programme on sustainable aquatic resource development being carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Vietnam News reported.

Odisha launches plan to boost freshwater aquaculture

 INDIA: The state of Odisha has launched a new scheme to favour the creation of additional 2,200 hectares of freshwater aquaculture farming with 50 percent financial assistance to farmers.

The state plan scheme, called Fish Pond Yojana, has been developed with Odisha Government funding of INR 960 million (USD 14.8 million), as it was announced by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Tuna zone-based fisheries management proves effective, PNA states

MARSHALL ISLANDS: Leaders of the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) point out that zone-based management of tuna fisheries in the western and central Pacific works effectively, adding that there is no interest in replacing it with a different management arrangement.
 
“Zone-based management works for conservation and business development,” said Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority Director Glen Joseph, who chairs the PNA.

MSC grants financial support to encourage tuna sustainable practice in India

INDIA: The non-government organisation Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has awarded GBP 43,373 fund to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-India for promoting sustainable practices in the country’s fisheries sector.

 
Through the award, the MSC intends to help WWF-India to develop management plans for bait and tuna fishery with the technical support of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).
