Tilapia farming project launched in the Gulf of Fonseca

HONDURAS: More than a hundred families from the Gulf of Fonseca will benefit from a fish farming project in floating cages installed in the town of San Lorenzo, Valle.

The project, which has just been inaugurated by Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, is being developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department (DIGESPESCA), and is jointly being carried out with the technical and financial support from the Government of Taiwan.

IOTC takes action in Indonesia

UNITED KINGDOM: Decision makers meeting at the 21st Annual Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) on May 26 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, considered 16 proposals aimed at enhancing the management of the tuna fisheries in the Indian Ocean, which was encouraging by the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF).

“Their growing awareness of the threats facing Indian Ocean tuna fisheries and their willingness to work together to safeguard the resources is a very positive sign for the fisheries as well as for the highly vulnerable coastal communities,” pointed out Adam Baske, IPNLF’s Director of Policy & Outreach.

Farmed shrimp origin can be traced back with high precision

WORLDWIDE: World Wildlife Fund (WWF) researchers determined that farmed shrimp from Thailand, Vietnam, and India could be traced back to their countries of origin with more than 98 per cent confidence through a process known as elemental profiling.

According to these scientists, with greater refinement, elemental profiling may help importers, customs officials, retailers, and others trace globally traded seafood back to its source, which can shed light on production practices with critical environmental and social implications.

Bluefin tuna quota left uncaught, ensures CONAPESCA

ECUADOR: The Mexican tuna fleet has not yet completed the catch quota for bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) established by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) for Mexico.

According to the subdelegate of the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA), Óscar Humberto Baylón Greco, the national fleet had captured around 2,200 tonnes until last Wednesday, below the authorized 3,000 tonnes.

Century Pacific Food ends first quarter with 10 pc profits

PHILIPPINES: Canned food company Century Pacific Food, Inc. (CNPF) reported its consolidated net income had grown 10 per cent year-on-year in the first three months of 2017, driven by the performance of its core business.

CNPF’s profits during the period reached PHP 701 million (USD 14 million), led by continued revenue growth across all business units and cost management initiatives.

Japan must stop overfishing bluefin tuna, Pew Charitable Trust warns

JAPAN: Conservation organisation Pew Charitable Trust expresses its concern about the fact that despite exceeding its fishing limit for Pacific bluefin earlier this month, Japan's Fishing Authority has decided to raise the quota for fishermen in 14 prefectures.

As it was informed in Japan Times, the Fisheries Agency has given these prefectures an additional quota of 122.2 tons for small specimens of the species catches in total.

Total Pacific bluefin tuna juvenile capture -- fish weighing less than 30 kg -- exceeded the 4,007 tonnes at the end of last month, which had been set for the season finishing in June.
