National waters sector opened for shrimp fishing

ARGENTINA: The fishing authorities finally decided to open a sector for shrimp fishing in national waters, within the Permanent Hake Ban Zone, following the migration of the resource to the North.

The National Fisheries Coordination Office ordered the opening of a strip between the parallels 42° 30' to 43' South latitude and meridians 62° and 62° 30' west longitude.

Airline reports fish transport strong growth to EU

SRI LANKA: The airline Emirates SkyCargo has reported an increase in exported fish volumes being transported from Sri Lanka to the European Union (EU) after a ban on the Asian country seafood export was lifted by Brussels last year.

The export of Sri Lankan fishery products to the European Union resumed in June 2016 after a ban was introduced in January 2015 because of a failure to comply with international rules and shortcomings in the introduction of control measures, Air Cargo News reported.

New Zealander tuna association joins IPNLF

NEW ZEALAND: The Tuna Management Association of New Zealand (TMA) has become the latest Member of the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) in an attempt to improve management and recognition for responsible tuna fisheries.

Founded in 2001, TMA supports a fleet of owner-operated domestic vessels by providing up-to-date information on fishery management issues and ensuring that the fleet remains aware of and compliant with local safety and management system requirements.

Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin tuna recovery still uncertain

WORLDWIDE: A new stock assessment of eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin tuna conducted by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) concludes that it is too early to determine this once severely depleted population has been fully rebuilt.

The NGO Pew Charitable Trusts states that ICCAT’s determination comes as many groups had expected to be celebrating a full recovery of the stock, which had improved after less than a decade of science-based fishery management policies.

Fisheries Ministry to establish an insurance scheme for fisher community

SRI LANKA: State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Dilip Wedaarachchi, said he expects to introduce a new insurance scheme soon for the fishermen that will benefit their families as well.

Pledging to uplift the fisheries industry in coming years in collaboration with the National Fisheries Federation, State Minister Wedaarachchi said he has initiated the program of Blue Economy for the development of the Sri Lanka's fisheries Industry.

Chinese official promises Fiji processing jobs, training for fisheries access

China’s top fisheries official has promised Fiji major investments in processing and training in return for access to its waters.

Speaking to officials at Fiji’s Ministry of Fisheries in Navu, Yu Kangzhen told his hosts, “We have huge potential for cooperation,” and promised China would create employment locally in processing, warehousing, and research facilities.

New study shows fish rich diets may increase mercury toxic levels in women

WORLDWIDE:A new study covering 25 countries found toxic levels of mercury in women from Alaska to Chile and Indonesia to Kenya due to fish-rich diets and to industrial pollution.

These researchers from IPEN found that women in the Pacific islands were the most pervasively contaminated as a result from their reliance on eating fish, which concentrate the mercury pollution found across the world’s oceans and much of which originates from coal burning.

FDA: Only ice can be used for preserving fish

INDIA: The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) is awaiting laboratory reports of the fish samples drawn from Margao and Panaji markets last week.

Salim Veljee, director, FDA told TOI on Monday that the samples were taken to examine if formalim was used as a preservative. They are expected to receive the reports on Wednesday.
