PNA tuna fishery obtains high MSC scores for recertification

MARSHALL ISLANDS: The Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) skipjack and yellowfin free school tuna fishery has been awarded the highest possible Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) scores on nearly every point of a preliminary review after undergoing the standard five year MSC certification reassessment.

Acoura Marine is the third party Certification Assessment Body (CAB) and the assessment is based on three main principles, split into 28 separate criteria.

Tsukiji seafood sellers worry about relocation plan uncertainties

JAPAN: Fishery wholesalers voiced concern about the future of the Tsukiji market due to the unclear relocation plans set by Tokyo Government.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike announced the fish market’s operations are relocated to the nearby Toyosu site and emphasised it was wise to use both Toyosu and Tsukiji, which raised worries among member of the association of fisheries wholesalers in Tokyo, who argue that “two markets cannot work in parallel,” Bloomberg reported.

Andra Pradesh plans to boost aquaculture

INDIA: Andra Pradesh government has devised various plans to ensure higher income through aquaculture in the state.

The announcement was made by Minister for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Ch Adinarayana Reddy during an official visit to Yalamanchili, Bhimavaram and Palacole mandals, where the official inspected the aqua labs, The Hans India reported.

Tilapia lake virus affects seven farms in Taoyuan

TAIWAN: The confirmation of tilapia lake virus (TiLV) presence in another fish farm in Taoyuan, Taipei, brings the total number of farming centres affected by the virus to seven since the virus was first reported in the city on June 13.

The Council of Agriculture (COA) informed that all seven infected fish farms are in the Guangyin District and within three kilometres of the first infected site and so the city government has ordered inspections of all ponds within a three-kilometre radius of the site.

MEXICO: In 2016 Mexico reached a seafood production of more than 1.7 million tons worth MXN 35 billion (USD 1,942 million), historical figures in the country in recent years. Of that volume, 388,000 tonnes correspond to aquaculture, an activity that is registering an average annual growth rate of 16 per cent, while the global advance is only 6 per cent.

Tilapia farming project launched in the Gulf of Fonseca

HONDURAS: More than a hundred families from the Gulf of Fonseca will benefit from a fish farming project in floating cages installed in the town of San Lorenzo, Valle.

The project, which has just been inaugurated by Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, is being developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department (DIGESPESCA), and is jointly being carried out with the technical and financial support from the Government of Taiwan.
