SPAIN : The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food participated on Tuesday in the opening of the XX International Fair of Frozen Seafood (CONXEMAR), an annual meeting for the entire seafood processing sector, distributor, importer and exporter.
For the minister, this fair that is held in Vigo, Galicia, is a reference, a showcase of quality products, combined with cutting-edge technology.
Luis Planas announced in this event that the Ministry is going to launch an institutional campaign to promote specific products of fisheries and aquaculture, within the framework of the Food from Spain program. This campaign, aimed mainly at children and young people, will encourage seafood consumption in the diet and will value all its qualities as healthy and quality food, obtained according to the most demanding parametres of sustainability.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food participates in CONXEMAR with an institutional exhibitor of 100 m2, which accommodates associations and industries of the fishing sector, to promote their products and promote business contacts. In addition, this space presents the Food Strategy of Spain, to raise awareness of the quality and variety of national products.
In his speech, Planas highlighted the great potential of the sector of the industry and the commercialization of fish products in Spain (canned and frozen), formed by something more than 600 companies, with a turnover of almost EUR 13,000 million, which generates more of 28,000 direct jobs.
The minister valued CONXEMAR initiative to create an interprofessional organization that unites production and processing branches. The main objective of this organization will be to promote frozen fish products, make production, processing and commercialization activities of their products visible and improve the benefit of all the links in the chain. And in a second phase, the interprofessional internationalization will be sought, to gain dimension and improve competitiveness. Planas has also highlighted this international vision.
On the other hand, Planas stressed the need to increase fish consumption. To this end, he said that the Government promotes actions such as institutional participation in national and international fairs, and also promotional activities of agri-food and fishing products are carried out.
In its twentieth edition, CONXEMAR has more than 700 exhibiting companies, an absolute record for this fair, which this year also aims to exceed the more than 36,000 visitors it received in its previous edition.
