UNITED STATES: A Pennsylvania-based company is capitalizing on the recent consumer trend towards plant-based and flexitarian eating, a goal for which it raised USD 5.5 million in funding from Stray Dog Capital.
This new change in taste shown by consumers who used to like fish such as tune partly stems from the concerns over the presence of mercury in this fish or over how dolphins sometimes get killed by being caught in tuna fishing nets.
Good Catch Foods decided to take advantage of this new trend and developed vegetarian snacks similar to shredded tuna, crab cakes, and fish patties made of lentils, chickpeas, fava beans, and other legumes, The Spoon reported.
Good Catch is developing plant-based tuna in three flavors: original, Mediterranean, and olive oil and herbs. They are made with their signature 6-Bean Non-GMO Plant Protein Blend, and has 13 grams of protein per serving. That is roughly half the protein of canned tuna, which has 25g of protein per similar-sized serving.
The firm claims their fish-free tuna will be in the market by the end of 2018.
