SPAIN: Anfaco-Cecopesca, through its General Secretary, Juan Vieites, will participate this Tuesday in a meeting with Michel Barnier, head of negotiations of the European Commission with the United Kingdom on its march of the European Union, which will take place in the Representation of the European Commission offices in Madrid.
The departure of the United Kingdom from the EU could imply the restoration of tariffs and the need to negotiate a free trade agreement that could take time to reach and even incorporate less favorable provisions, which would affect trade flows in the industrial processing of fish and shellfish products sector.
The United Kingdom is a very relevant market for Spain as regards foreign trade in fishery and aquaculture products, since it is at the top of the ranking of countries that purchase these products, as the total of exports is of 21,464 tonnes valued at EUR 98.8 million.
Canned tuna and tuna elaborated products are the main exports since they represent 47 percent in volume and 43 percent in value of total exports.
As regards Spanish imports from the British countryside, these reach 39,650 tonnes valued at EUR 224.3 million. The United Kingdom is one of Spain's main suppliers of fresh or refrigerated hake, being the main product that Spain imports from the United Kingdom (5,563 tonnes valued at EUR 25.3 million).
