MAJOR SHIFT IN GLOBAL SEAFOOD

PAPUA NEW GUINEA: There is a major shift taking place in the global flow of seafood said INFOFISH acting director Ms Shirlene Maria Anthonysamy. 

Ms Anthonysamy was speaking at the official launching of the payment system and website link for the upcoming Inaugural Seafood and Technology Exposition and Sixth Pacific Tuna Forum in Port Moresby on 15th February 2017.

 

Ms Anthonysamy said the staging of these two strategic events were timed.

She told guests at the launching that Asia remained the fastest growing market in the region with increased imports of high value seafood which is harvested in the Pacific region.

It is also the region that pays the highest value of seafood.

She said apart from Asia, markets are also gaining momentum in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

She said these events, which are set to take place on September 12 – 14 would also provide other opportunities as other opportunities as well for not just the Papua New Guinea as the host but the Pacific region as well, which could support food security efforts.

“INFOFISH is confident that the maiden expo 2017 is a timely even and an excellent opportunity to bring global fisheries to the pacific.

“The events opens an array of prospects for the Pacific Seafood Industry the  Pacific region is also the global hub for tuna sporting more than 50 percent of the world’s tuna catches thus also the perfect location to host the convention of the Pacific tuna industry,” she said.

She said the forum will be the sixth edition of the series of tuna forums co-organised by the NFA and INFOFISH, centering around the theme.

“The program this year will not just discuss the challenge and updates of the tuna industry, it will also present opportunities for expansion, growth of the SMEs including investment and market opportunities, market access social responsibility as well as processing and technological developments.

“We look forward to seeing you at this largest tuna convention in the region.
